CATARACT

Our eyes have a natural lens that allows images to be focused clearly on the retina which is the light sensitive screen at the back of the eye. With age, the natural lens becomes cloudy or opaque and loses its clarity. This prevents light rays from reaching the retina and the vision is reduced.

The only definitive treatment for cataract is surgery. Surgery is recommended when cataract affects vision to an extent that it hampers day to day activities like driving, reading and writing.

Cataract surgery is quick, simple and painless. The surgery is done without injection, stitch or pad. Phacoemulsification is the present universally accepted standard form of cataract surgery. In this procedure, a very small opening is made in the eye, ultrasound energy is used to break up the cataract (emulsify) the cataract in to tiny fragments which is taken out of the eye. A foldable intraocular lens is inserted. The patient can resume his activities within a short period of time after surgery.
